I have just started the Adkins’ “new” diet again, which is strictly extremely low-carb. This is the second time I’ve tried it because the first time I did, I felt so good that I knew it worked at least for me it did, in not only helping me lose weight, but also in helping to control my blood sugar. I agree that low-carb eating for diabetics is healthy and makes a person feel so much better than loading up on carbs. I am a Type 2 diabetic. Gestational diabetes (the type triggered by pregnancy and hormonal changes) affects about 4 percent of all pregnant women, especially Hispanic, African-American, Native American and Asian women, along with those who are over 25 years old, above their normal body weight before pregnancy and who have a family history of diabetes. Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone have been approved as first line therapies in diabetes and for use in combination with other drugs. Both drugs may be used in patients taking other oral drugs or insulin.

But people are curing diabetes every day. It’s simple and straightforward, and when you cure diabetes, you greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, obesity and cancer at the same time. The thing is, no one will cure your diabetes for you. Sure, the drug companies want to “treat” you with diabetes drugs, but you have to keep taking those for a lifetime. They don’t cure anything. The only real cure can come from YOU — by changing what you eat and increasing your exercise.

Normally, your pancreas responds by producing enough extra insulin to overcome this resistance. But sometimes your pancreas can’t keep up. When this happens, too little glucose gets into your cells and too much stays in your blood, resulting in gestational diabetes.

Pancreas and islet transplantation have been shown to normalize glucose levels but require life-long immunosuppression to prevent graft rejection and recurrence of autoimmune islet destruction. Given the potential adverse effects of immunosuppressive therapy, pancreas transplantation should be reserved for patients with type 1 diabetes undergoing simultaneous renal transplantation, following renal transplantation, or for those with recurrent ketoacidosis or severe hypoglycemia despite intensive glycemic management (29).

Exercise regularly. Exercise is an absolutely essential factor, and without it, you’re unlikely to get this devastating disease under control. It is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance. Polycystic ovary syndrome. For women, having polycystic ovary syndrome — a common condition characterized by irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth and obesity — increases the risk of diabetes.

Eye damage (retinopathy). Diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the retina (diabetic retinopathy), potentially leading to blindness. Diabetes also increases the risk of other serious vision conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma.

Dean recommends her patients supplement with vitamin D “to help strengthen the cellular signals and replete the body.” She believes her patients respond to carb counting much better with nutrient supplementation. “There’s no one magical vitamin—it’s a symphony of nutrients that work together,” she says.

“Perfect glycemic control” would mean that glucose levels were always normal (70–130 mg/dl, or 3.9–7.2 mmol/L) and indistinguishable from a person without diabetes. In reality, because of the imperfections of treatment measures, even “good glycemic control” describes blood glucose levels that average somewhat higher than normal much of the time. In addition, one survey of type 2 diabetics found that they rated the harm to their quality of life from intensive interventions to control their blood sugar to be just as severe as the harm resulting from intermediate levels of diabetic complications.[30]

But is this argument totally true? Perhaps not. Vegans and vegetarians tend to eat a lot of carbs, and many of them seem to do quite well with diabetes. Many people in poor countries who cannot afford meat also have relatively low rates of diabetes. So what’s their secret? What are they eating?

Choose healthy foods and maintain a healthy weight. Losing just 7 percent of your body weight if you’re overweight can make a significant difference in your blood sugar control. A healthy diet is one with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, with a limited amount of saturated fat.

Eat sweets with a meal, rather than as a stand-alone snack. When eaten on their own, sweets cause your blood sugar to spike. But if you eat them along with other healthy foods as part of your meal, your blood sugar won’t rise as rapidly.

People with type 1 diabetes (T1D) can live long, happy lives with proper care and disease management. Advancements in medication types and delivery methods give people the freedom to choose which treatment options work best with their particular circumstance. Following a type 2 diabetes diet doesn’t mean you have to give up all the things you love — you can still enjoy a wide range of foods and, in some cases, even help reverse type 2 diabetes. Indeed, creating a diet for diabetes is a balancing act: It includes a variety of healthy carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The trick is ultimately choosing the right combination of foods that will help keep your blood sugar level in your target range and avoid big swings that can cause diabetes symptoms — from the frequent urination and thirst of high blood sugar to the fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and mood changes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

A low-carbohydrate diet or low GI diet can be an effective dietary option for managing type 2 diabetes. These have been promoted as working by reducing spikes in blood sugar levels after eating.[21][22] However, the main contribution may be that overweight and obese people with Type 2 diabetes often lose weight while following these diets.[3][4] Any diet that causes significant weight loss in overweight and obese people with Type 2 diabetes is associated with improvements in blood sugar control.[3][4]

The sneakiest source of simple carbs are sugary beverages: sodas, juices (fresh squeezed and from concentrate), sweetened tea and coffee beverages, drink mixers and the ilk. That’s why it’s crucial to cut these out as much as possible when you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Since they’re quickly digested and absorbed, they rapidly raise blood sugar — as soon as 15 minutes after drinking ’em.

“There are millions of people with type-2 diabetes who are undiagnosed,” says Kristi Silver, MD, acting director of the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology. How could this be? “More often than not, during the early stages people have no symptoms at all,” she says.

Diabetes also is an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases. This is referred to as macrovascular disease.
