In the U.S., diabetes — or diabetes mellitus (DM) — is full-blown epidemic, and that’s not hyperbole. An estimated 29 million Americans have some form of diabetes, nearly 10 percent the population, and even more alarming, the average American has a one in three chance of developing diabetes symptoms at some point in his or her lifetime. Low glycemic index foods also may be helpful. The glycemic index is a measure of how quickly a food causes a rise in your blood sugar. Foods with a high glycemic index raise your blood sugar quickly. Low glycemic index foods may help you achieve a more stable blood sugar. Foods with a low glycemic index typically are foods that are higher in fiber.
Learned a few things…Cannot say whether successful or not…but, I feel much better. Some of the ideas are easy to implement. Others more questionable…but, may turn out to be helpful. I feel better after implementing just a couple of the suggestions.
Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that develops at the late stages of pregnancy in a person who does not have diabetes. Although gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, a woman may be at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes can be caused by hormones or lack of insulin.
Meanwhile, a serious complication of diabetes called diabetic ketoacidosis occurs when your body produces high levels of ketones (or blood acids). This condition occurs when your body can’t produce enough insulin.

What you’re aiming for: your best health, not someone else’s. Diet and exercise alone will control diabetes for some people. For others, a combination of medication and healthy habits will keep them at their best.
Erectile dysfunction (ED, impotence), or inability to get or maintain an erection, is a common symptom of diabetes in men. Diabetic men experience erectile dysfunction at earlier ages than men who do not have diabetes.
A person’s health and well-being depend upon proper management of blood sugar levels. Regular visits to the doctor and following diet, exercise, and medication guidelines can help control blood sugar for a better quality of life.
Diabetes also is an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases. This is referred to as macrovascular disease.
A common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar); however, shorter-acting agents such as glipizide (Glucotrol) and glimepiride (Amaryl) may have less risk of hypoglycemia.This class may also cause weight gain and is therefore not suitable for obese patients. Sulfonyureas should not be used in patients with severe kidney disease.

Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) usually shows up in the middle of the pregnancy and typically doesn’t have any symptoms. If you’re pregnant, you should be tested for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy so you can make changes if needed to protect your health and your baby’s health.
The serving-size guideline for seafood is the same for meat and poultry: 3 ounces. Even though fish might be more expensive than other protein sources, preparing it at home rather than ordering it in a restaurant keeps the cost down.

A balanced diet is the first step towards curing diabetes. You must say avoid junk food and starch, and focus on real food, like fruits and vegetables. These foods go a long way in helping to quickly get rid of diabetes.
The actual level of blood sugar at which these symptoms occur varies with each person, but usually it occurs when blood sugars are less than 50 mg/dl. Untreated, severely low blood sugar levels can lead to coma, seizures, and, in the worst case scenario, irreversible brain death.
Unlike many other health conditions, the incredible thing about type 2 diabetes is that it can be controlled and reversed with lifestyle changes. Fiber-rich foods. Dietary fiber includes all parts of plant foods that your body can’t digest or absorb. Fiber moderates how your body digests and helps control blood sugar levels. Foods high in fiber include vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), whole-wheat flour and wheat bran.
Insufficient production of insulin (either absolutely or relative to the body’s needs), production of defective insulin (which is uncommon), or the inability of cells to use insulin properly and efficiently leads to hyperglycemia and diabetes.

GMO foods: GMO corn, soy and canola have been linked to kidney and liver disease and may promote diabetes. I suggest removing all GMO foods and all packaged foods from your diet. Opt for products that are labeled organic or GMO-free.
Your meal plan is made just for you, based on your age, activity level, schedule, and food likes and dislikes. It also should be flexible so you know how to handle diabetes in special situations like at parties and on holidays. Following your meal plan should make it easier to keep your blood sugar levels within a healthy range.
One of my patients, aged 58, had an initial hemoglobin A1c of 7.2%. She was taking oral hypoglycemic agents, statins, and proton pump inhibitors—the basic treatment for every diabetes diagnosis. The patient was 28 lbs overweight and worked long hours. She didn’t exercise, mostly ate a processed food diet, and was sleep deprived. The patient had a family history of diabetes, and ultimately her lifestyle expressed her genetic tendencies.
