The body does not produce insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years.

It is very important to eat after the taking insulin, as the insulin will lower blood sugar regardless of whether the person has eaten. If insulin is taken without eating, the result may be hypoglycemia. This is called an insulin reaction.

Need another reason to fit more spinach into your meal plan? The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reported on a study to determine whether eating more fruits and veggies can lower the risk of developing diabetes. The answer? People who ate more green leafy vegetables (including spinach in particular) reduced their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 14 percent. Despite some limitations of the study, the ADA’s takeway was this: “People who want to lower their chances for developing diabetes should consider eating more green leafy vegetables.”

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are a class of oral antidiabetic drugs used in type 2 diabetes. SGLT-2 inhibitors work by lowering the renal (kidney) glucose threshold, resulting in an increased amount of glucose being excreted in the urine. These agents are not used first line for type 2 diabetes treatment, but can be combined with other medications.

Just because you’re not keyed in doesn’t mean you’re immune from problems associated with diabetes, he adds. The longer you go without controlling diabetes, the greater your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, amputation, blindness, and other serious complications. “We recommend that people with risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history or being overweight, get evaluated on a regular basis,” Dr. Cypess says. If you’ve been feeling off, talk to your doctor about getting a simple blood test that can diagnose the disease. And pay attention to these subtle signs and symptoms of diabetes.

When diabetes occurs in women during pregnancy, it is called gestational diabetes. It usually is diagnosed between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. Like in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, blood sugar levels become too high. When women are pregnant, more glucose is needed to nourish the developing baby. The body needs more insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. In some women, the body does not produce enough insulin to meet this need, and blood sugar levels rise, resulting in gestational diabetes.

As more data become available, evidence is mounting that thiazolidinediones may provide direct benefits to the heart and large blood vessels. They may prevent progression to diabetes in prediabetic individuals at high risk by reducing inflammation and by decreasing clotting factors.

The diabetes meal plan won’t tell you specific foods to eat, but it will guide you in selecting choices from the basic food groups and help you eat nutritious, balanced meals. Each meal and snack in the plan contains a certain amount of carbs and works with the types and amount of insulin you take.

You should work closely with your health care provider to learn how much fat, protein, and carbohydrates you need in your diet. Your specific meal plans need to be tailored to your food habits and People with type 1 diabetes should eat at about the same times each day and try to be consistent with the types of food they choose. This helps to prevent blood sugars from becoming extremely high or low. Type 2 diabetics should follow a well-balanced and low-fat diet.

Before you have a slice of cake, ask yourself the following questions: Will that small piece of cake be satisfying or will I still be hungry? How will it fit into my meal plan? Do I have 300 calories to “spend” on this? Are there other choices I could make which would contribute less fat?

SI: That was my moment of truth, if you will. I thought, it doesn’t make any sense. What we are telling people to do, the message to pre-diabetics today in America is “Don’t you worry. You’re getting fit but you have to eat a little less, eat a little healthier and exercise a little more everything will be just fine.” Well I had been doing that freaking 20 years.

Strength training is a light or moderate physical activity that builds muscle and helps keep your bones healthy. Strength training is important for both men and women. When you have more muscle and less body fat, you’ll burn more calories. Burning more calories can help you lose and keep off extra weight.

Two glitazones are available: pioglitazone and rosiglitazone. These drugs can have the side effects of weight gain or swelling and are associated with increased risks of heart disease and stroke, bladder cancer and fractures.
