Diabetes can also result from other hormonal disturbances, such as excessive growth hormone production (acromegaly) and Cushing’s syndrome. In acromegaly, a pituitary gland tumor at the base of the brain causes excessive production of growth hormone, leading to hyperglycemia. In Cushing’s syndrome, the adrenal glands produce an excess of cortisol, which promotes blood sugar elevation.

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with age, and the disease becomes more common in people over age 45. As stated above, anyone 45 years of age or older who is overweight or obese and that has at least one other risk factor for diabetes should get tested for diabetes.

Insulin is usually given as three or four injections per day, generally around mealtimes. Dosage is individualized and is tailored to the patient’s specific needs by the health-care professional. Longer-acting insulin formulations are typically administered once or twice each day.

Regarding age, data shows that for each decade after 40 years of age regardless of weight there is an increase in incidence of diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes in persons 65 years of age and older is around 25%. Type 2 diabetes is also more common in certain ethnic groups. Compared with a 7% prevalence in non-Hispanic Caucasians, the prevalence in Asian Americans is estimated to be 8.0%, in Hispanics 13%, in blacks around 12.3%, and in certain Native American communities 20% to 50%. Finally, diabetes occurs much more frequently in women with a prior history of diabetes that develops during pregnancy (gestational diabetes).

To treat diabetic retinopathy, a laser is used to destroy and prevent the recurrence of the development of these small aneurysms and brittle blood vessels. Approximately 50% of patients with diabetes will develop some degree of diabetic retinopathy after 10 years of diabetes, and 80% retinopathy after 15 years of the disease. Poor control of blood sugar and blood pressure further aggravates eye disease in diabetes.

According to a review of clinical trials published in December 2014 in JAMA Surgery, people with diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery had greater weight loss than those who received nonsurgical treatment, and the surgery was more effective in helping obese participants get diabetes under control. An article on the notable Surgical Treatment and Medications Potentially Eradicate Diabetes Efficiently trial, which was published in February 2017 in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that gastric bypass surgery and sleeve gastrectomy helped people with diabetes attain better glycemic control than medication alone. Compared with the medication-only group, people who underwent the surgeries also saw greater reductions in heart disease risk and medication use, as well as an improved quality of life.

Diabetes is a costly disease, placing a high financial burden on the patient and the healthcare system. If poorly managed or left untreated, it can cause blindness, loss of kidney function, and conditions that require the amputation of digits or limbs. The CDC reports that it’s also a major cause of heart disease and stroke and the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

In persons with type 1 diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas, which are responsible for insulin production, are attacked by the misdirected immune system. It is believed that the tendency to develop abnormal antibodies in type 1 diabetes is, in part, genetically inherited, though the details are not fully understood.

But people are curing diabetes every day. It’s simple and straightforward, and when you cure diabetes, you greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, obesity and cancer at the same time. The thing is, no one will cure your diabetes for you. Sure, the drug companies want to “treat” you with diabetes drugs, but you have to keep taking those for a lifetime. They don’t cure anything. The only real cure can come from YOU — by changing what you eat and increasing your exercise.

If you have any of these diabetes warning signs, contact your health care provider right away so you can have a diabetes test. Even people with pre-diabetes can have the increased risk from heart disease seen in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Overall: l started janumet 3 wks ago and my glucose reading are staying higher than before when l took invokana!…l was switched to janumet because a new dr. thought it was causing me to have a vaginal infection…well l still have vaginal infection plus my glucose reading are in the 250 range……

Thanks David for the great information. And thanks to all you who post. It is wonderful to get so much personal experiences in one place. I have found that peas have a lot of protein. They also are high in carbs. I eat about of cup of them with broccoli and some tahini & garlic for dinner so the carbs are ok. After going to one of your “here’s” I have decided to add Braggs amino in the mix as well. I am exercising again and have cut way down on the carbs. Weight is coming off which I did not think would happen, as I have been trying to lose with no results. Most important to me is my numbers are coming down. I am not at the place that many of the above folks are, but now have new hope of getting off medication, or at least cutting down. Again Thank you for helping me find a new way to health.

The American Diabetes Association recommends routine screening for type 2 diabetes beginning at age 45, especially if you’re overweight. If the results are normal, repeat the test every three years. If the results are borderline, ask your doctor when to come back for another test.
