Just because something doesn’t have sugar in it doesn’t mean you can eat as much as you want. Your meal plan is designed so that the carbohydrate content of your meals remains as consistent as possible from day to day.
Talking to a counselor or therapist may help you cope with the lifestyle changes that come with a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. You may find encouragement and understanding in a type 2 diabetes support group. Although support groups aren’t for everyone, they can be good sources of information. Group members often know the latest treatments and tend to share their own experiences or helpful information, such as where to find carbohydrate counts for your favorite takeout restaurant. If you’re interested, your doctor may be able to recommend a group in your area.
Krzysztof Slusarczyk/ShutterstockThe list of benefits for nuts goes on and on. They contain vitamin E, unsaturated fats, fiber, plant sterols, omega-3 fatty acids, and L-arginine, which makes arteries less prone to blood clots. Nuts can also improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes.

Inhalable insulin has been developed. The original products were withdrawn due to side effects. Afrezza, under development by the pharmaceuticals company MannKind Corporation, was approved by the FDA for general sale in June 2014. An advantage to inhaled insulin is that it may be more convenient and easy to use.
A urinalysis may be used to look for glucose and ketones from the breakdown of fat. However, a urine test alone does not diagnose diabetes. The following blood glucose tests are used to diagnose diabetes:
• The National Institutes of Health states that flaxseed is possibly effective for lowering hemoglobin A1C in people with type 2 diabetes, a measure of average blood sugar levels over two to three months.
Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida. Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth and throat. Oral thrush and yeast infections are treated orally or topically with an antifungal antibiotic called nystatin.
Your doctor will explain how to recognize the early symptoms of blood sugar that’s too high or too low and what to do in each situation. Your doctor will also help you learn which foods are healthy and which foods aren’t.
Want to make your pizza dough, but don’t have time for it to rise? This is a quick and easy recipe for you! Just combine whole wheat flour, yeast, wheat germ, salt and honey, bake, and then top with your favorite toppings.
Taking 200 micrograms of chromium picolinate three times daily with meals can help improve insulin sensitivity. A review published in Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics evaluated 13 studies that reported significant improvement in glycemic control and substantial reductions in hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia after patients used chromium picolinate supplementation. Other positive outcomes from supplementing with chromium picolinate included reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduced requirements for hypoglycemic medication. (12)
Some people who have type 2 diabetes can achieve their target blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone, but many also need diabetes medications or insulin therapy. The decision about which medications are best depends on many factors, including your blood sugar level and any other health problems you have. Your doctor might even combine drugs from different classes to help you control your blood sugar in several different ways.

Choosing extra-healthy power foods for your diabetes-friendly diet will help you meet your nutritional needs as well as lower your risk of diabetes complications such as heart disease. Of course, the foods on this list shouldn’t be the only foods you eat, but incorporating some or all into your diabetes meal plan in place of less-nutritious choices will help improve your overall health.
For most people with type 2 diabetes, weight loss also can make it easier to control blood glucose and offers a host of other health benefits. If you need to lose weight, a diabetes diet provides a well-organized, nutritious way to reach your goal safely.
Take stress seriously. The hormones your body may produce in response to prolonged stress may prevent insulin from working properly, which will raise your blood sugar and stress you even more. Set limits for yourself and prioritize your tasks. Learn relaxation techniques. And get plenty of sleep.

The number one evidence-based method for blood sugar management is carbohydrate counting, or planning meals using carb “exchanges.” Every 15 grams of carbs are equal to 1 exchange, and you have a certain number of exchanges per meal. For example, if you’re aiming to eat 45 grams of carbs at lunch, you’ll budget out three exchanges. Carb counting was designed specifically for anyone taking insulin for diabetes management because it correlates directly with units of short-acting insulin.
Though there is no cure for diabetes, a wide variety of medications, lifestyle changes, and alternative remedies can help manage symptoms and improve overall health. Consult your doctor before starting any new treatments, even if you think they’re safe.
Optimal management of diabetes involves patients measuring and recording their own blood glucose levels. By keeping a diary of their own blood glucose measurements and noting the effect of food and exercise, patients can modify their lifestyle to better control their diabetes. For patients on insulin, patient involvement is important in achieving effective dosing and timing.
